GEORGE – Eight of South Africa’s most distinguished community rugby clubs have been confirmed for the 2026 Ebrahim Patel Community Cup, organisers announced on Wednesday 4 February.

The tournament, taking place in George from Thursday 2 to Monday 6 April, will feature Kruisfontein United, PE Harlequins, Safcol United, Botrivier, Crusaders, Bridgton, Heidelberg and Robertson “Town” rugby football clubs – all clubs with proud histories, strong supporter bases, and deep community roots.

Tournament director Romano Lekay said the competition has established itself as the premier platform for community rugby in South Africa. “The Ebrahim Patel Community Cup has evolved beyond a tournament,” he explained.

“It is unlocking meaningful investment into community rugby through measurable audience growth, broadcast exposure and credible delivery. Sponsors are seeing real return, clubs are benefiting from increased visibility and communities are starting to feel the impact.”

The participating clubs represent the finest examples of community rugby across the country, each bringing their unique heritage and passionate local support to what has become South Africa’s most anticipated community rugby weekend.

Development is key

The tournament places strong emphasis on grassroots development, with organisers consistently reinvesting proceeds into local communities.

Recent initiatives have included equipment donations, coaching clinics, and empowerment programmes delivered in partnership with the Deon Davids Foundation and Kabamba Floors.

“Together with our partners, we have intentionally invested back into communities where the need is greatest, including George and Grabouw,” Lekay added. “This has included the provision of playing kit, hosting rugby and netball clinics, and facilitating empowerment sessions. These initiatives are about empowerment, access, and building sustainable community sport structures.”

The 2026 edition is expected to feature expanded broadcast coverage and enhanced digital engagement, further elevating the profile of all participating clubs.

The tournament continues to attract growing commercial and institutional interest as it cements its position as a leading community rugby showcase.

Honouring legends

The competition promises fierce rivalry as each club vies for national recognition during the Easter weekend tournament. All eight teams will be looking to demonstrate the quality and passion that characterises South African community rugby at its finest.

True to its founding ethos, the Ebrahim Patel Community Cup remains committed to honouring rugby legends, showcasing emerging talent and creating sustainable pathways for players, coaches, and communities while preserving the legacy of non-racial rugby in South Africa.

The tournament launch later this month will provide the first opportunity to see how the eight clubs will be matched in the competition draw, setting the stage for what promises to be an exceptional weekend of community rugby in George.

The participating clubs are affiliated to unions across South Africa:

  • Eastern Province: Kruisfontein United, PE Harlequins and Crusaders.
  • Boland: Safcol United, Botrivier and Robertson.
  • South Western Districts: Bridgton and Heidelberg
