Ster-Kinekor Theatres will screen three classic films during February as part of its Throwback Cinema promotion, with tickets priced at R50 each.
The February lineup includes two Valentine’s Day-themed releases and the final instalment of The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
The first screening, Fifty Shades of Grey, opens on 6 February. The 2015 psychological thriller, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and based on E.L. James’s bestseller, follows college student Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) as she enters a complex relationship with businessman Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan). The film grossed over $569 million worldwide against a $40 million budget.

On 20 February, the 1995 romantic comedy Sense and Sensibility will screen. Based on Jane Austen’s novel, the film features a screenplay by Emma Thompson, who won an Oscar for her work. Directed by Ang Lee, the film stars Thompson, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman and Hugh Laurie. The story follows the Dashwood sisters as they navigate love and financial insecurity in Georgian-era England.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King screens on 27 February, marking the 25th anniversary of the trilogy. The 2004 film won 11 Academy Awards, including best picture and best director for Peter Jackson.

The Throwback Cinema screenings take place at Ster-Kinekor venues in Johannesburg, Tshwane, Vanderbijlpark, Potchefstroom, Gqeberha, Somerset West, and Cape Town. The Return of the King will screen at additional locations including Fourways, Brooklyn, Bloemfontein, and George.
