There is a saying that those who keep going through adversity are the ones that make it in the end.

Aidan Bester’s inclusion in the Junior Springbok group exemplifies this type of resilience. Kevin Foote recently named Bester as part of his training squad, despite him not being contracted by a big union. He plays for Saldanha club and is the only club player in the squad.

“Bester’s achievement represents a testament to his dedication, discipline, and natural talent. The young prospect joined Saldanhabay Rugby Club’s pre-season programme earlier this year and has rapidly progressed through the ranks to earn national recognition.

Adding further momentum to his rugby journey, Bester recently signed with the IRI Saldanha Academy, strengthening his pathway to elite rugby. This opportunity will provide crucial development support as he continues his progression towards professional ranks,” the club said in a statement.

Executive mayor of the Saldanha Bay municipality, André Truter, also extended his congratulations to Bester.

“Being identified at national level at the age of 18 speaks volumes about Aidan’s commitment, discipline, and passion for rugby. His journey serves as a powerful reminder of what is possible when talent is matched with hard work and the right support structures,” Truter said.

Bester matriculated in 2025 at Noordheuwel, where he played for the 1st XV. The Lions selected him for their Craven Week team. His coach at Noordheuwel, Ian Joubert, notes that Bester is one of the most dedicated and disciplined players he has coached.

“He is a lively player who brings a vibe to the team. He always stays positive. Even though things haven’t worked out yet, in terms of a scholarship or professional contract, he stays positive.”

According to Joubert, Bester suffered an injury last year. When he returned to the team, they suffered a big loss.

“He experienced a dark time, but afterwards he kept growing as a player, and the team started growing together. He is a really good kid. He possesses excellent conditioning, extreme speed, and great finishing attributes. He boxes above his weight, shows no fear in defence, and knows how to score a try. He is a real team player,” Joubert said.
