HARRISMITH – A house robber has been sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment after robbing and assaulting an elderly homeowner in Harrismith.
The Magistrates’ Court in Harrismith found Ncebo Bhengu (32) guilty of house robbery on 22 January following a trial that revealed the violent nature of his crime.
During the trial, it was discovered that on Saturday, 1 March 2025, at 16:45, police received a call from the complainant reporting the incident.

Upon arrival at the scene in Lotusville, Harrismith, Warrant Officer Mahlaba, attached to Harrismith Visible Policing, testified that he met a witness named Samson, who informed him that the attacker had fled into bushes beneath a nearby bridge.
Samson further informed police that the victim, Dineo Moloi (62), had already been transported to hospital by private vehicle, having sustained a stab wound to the abdomen during the attack.

Warrant Officer Mahlaba called for backup, and the suspect was subsequently apprehended. Bhengu was found in possession of several items belonging to the victim, including house and car keys, bank cards, three mobile phones, and cash.
The case was investigated by Captain VJ Zwane, whose thorough investigation ensured the successful prosecution of the accused.
The 15-year sentence reflects the serious nature of the crime, which involved both robbery and assault of an elderly victim.
