NTABANKULU, Eastern Cape – A second teacher has died from injuries sustained when a former colleague opened fire on teachers at Ntabankulu Primary School on Thursday, 22 January.

One teacher died on the scene and two others sustained injuries.

The attacker, who was dismissed from the school in 2023 following sexual assault charges and was out on bail, killed himself after the shooting.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said the former teacher forced entry to the school at approximately noon by cutting through the perimeter fence. He went directly to the school kitchen where he opened fire on three teachers before turning the gun on himself.

Gantana said the investigation is being conducted under case classifications including two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, and one inquest docket.
