From viral Trump impersonators in China to marriage mishaps involving artificial intelligence, this week’s collection of unusual news stories spans continents and cultures, offering a lighter look at global happenings.

China: ‘Chinese Trump’ gains millions of followers

Ryan Chen, a rotund architect from Chongqing, has garnered millions of social media followers with his remarkably accurate impersonations of US President Donald Trump. The entertainer, dubbed the “Chinese Trump,” has mastered both the verbal patterns and physical mannerisms of the American leader.

“He’s tremendous… People are saying he’s the greatest ever… I’m impressed,” fans frequently comment about Chen’s performances, which feature Trump-like commentary on Chinese daily life.

Chen’s approach deliberately avoids political satire, instead focusing on the absurdity of Trump’s persona navigating Chinese culture. In one popular video, he portrays Trump admiring the Great Wall of China, describing it as built to “keep out the Mexigolians.”

“I’m not into politics, but I think he is a very good entertainer,” Chen told AFP from his hometown. “Trump is an endless well that never runs dry.”

The performer has leveraged his alter ego to promote Chongqing’s attractions, cuisine, and even its pandas, claiming with characteristic Trump-style bombast that they could defeat any opponent in wrestling.

“If I imitate him, it’s not to make fun of him. It’s to get attention,” Chen explained. “With that attention, I can boost my career, as well as promote China and my hometown.”

Japan: Female lawmakers demand more restroom facilities

Japan’s 73 female parliamentarians are calling for additional women’s restroom facilities near the main legislative chamber, where they currently must share a single toilet.

Opposition MP Yasuko Komiyama highlighted the practical challenges facing women in Japan’s male-dominated political environment. “Women lawmakers have to form long queues in front of the restroom,” she said.

The issue has gained renewed attention following recent electoral gains that brought Sanae Takaichi to power as Japan’s first female prime minister. The number of women in the 465-seat lower house increased from 45 in the previous session to 73 following the latest election.

The Netherlands: AI-generated wedding vows invalidate marriage

A Dutch couple in Zwolle discovered their April wedding ceremony was legally invalid after using ChatGPT to compose their vows, which omitted required legal language.

The couple had sought an informal ceremony reflecting their personalities and enlisted a friend to officiate. The friend turned to artificial intelligence to help craft the vows, which included promises “to love and to laugh” but failed to include the mandatory legal declaration establishing their union.

Despite appeals to local officials, a court ruled the marriage invalid, forcing the couple to plan a second ceremony to legally formalize their relationship.

United States-Venezuela: Trump cites dancing as grievance against Maduro

President Donald Trump has added an unusual complaint to his list of grievances against Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro: dance imitation.

Speaking to Republican law makers, Trump accused Maduro of copying his signature moves among other alleged offenses. “He gets up there and he tries to imitate my dance a little bit… But he’s a violent guy, and he’s killed millions of people,” Trump said.

The comments referenced Maduro’s defiant dancing to a techno remix of his slogan “No War, Yes Peace” as US forces gathered in the Caribbean region.

Trump, known for dancing to “YMCA” at campaign rallies, acknowledged family criticism of his performances. “My wife hates when I do this,” he said of First Lady Melania Trump’s reaction. “She said, ‘It’s so unpresidential.’”

The president added with characteristic irreverence: “Could you imagine FDR dancing?” – a reference to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was paralyzed from the waist down due to polio.
