The South African Council of Churches (SACC) has extended warm congratulations to Archbishop-elect Sithembele Sipuka following his appointment as Metropolitan Archbishop of Cape Town by Pope Leo XIV.
In a statement released on Saturday, 10 January, the SACC expressed deep gratitude for what they described as “God’s call on his life and God’s faithfulness throughout his ministry.”
Archbishop-elect Sipuka brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having previously served as Bishop of the Diocese of Mthatha. His leadership credentials include serving as president of both the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC) and the SACC itself.
The SACC praised Sipuka’s “deep ecumenical spirit, theological rigor, advocacy for education, commitment to reconciliation, and ethical leadership.” They highlighted his particular compassion and dedication to the marginalized and vulnerable members of society.
Spiritual encouragement
In their congratulatory message, the SACC offered biblical encouragement to the new Archbishop-elect, quoting from Joshua 1:9: “Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
They also drew inspiration from 1 Peter 5:2-3, expressing hope that his “ministry to the people of the Archdiocese of Cape Town be marked by the heart of Christ, serving God’s people willingly and faithfully.”
The SACC described the new Archbishop as “God’s offering to the nation and the church,” acknowledging his exceptional service to the broader church community and South African society.
The Council assured Archbishop-elect Sipuka of their continued prayers and support from all member churches as he prepares to take on this significant ecclesiastical responsibility.
Commitment to reconciliation
The appointment comes at a time when the SACC particularly values Sipuka’s commitment to reconciliation and his advocacy for education – qualities they believe will serve the diverse Cape Town archdiocese well.
His track record of working across denominational lines and his focus on ethical leadership have earned him respect throughout the South African Christian community.
The SACC’s statement concluded with assurances of ongoing support as Archbishop-elect Sipuka prepares to serve the people of the Cape Town archdiocese with what they described as courage, humility, compassion, and hope.
