The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has issued an urgent warning to the public about criminals posing as TV licence inspectors to gain entry into homes before robbing unsuspecting residents.
The alert comes after reports began circulating on social media about fraudsters claiming to represent the SABC in order to access people’s properties under false pretences.
SABC spokesperson Mmoni Ngubane stated that the national broadcaster has not appointed any inspectors or officials to conduct door-to-door inspections of television sets in private residences.
“We want to make it absolutely clear that the SABC does not conduct home inspections,” Ngubane said “Anyone claiming to be an SABC representative seeking access to your home should be treated with suspicion.”
The broadcaster has urged members of the public to immediately report any individuals claiming to be SABC officials to local police stations. Such reports will help authorities track down the criminals and prevent further incidents.
Ngubane explained that the SABC maintains strict protocols for communicating with TV licence holders, utilising only official and secure channels. “Door-to-door inspections are not part of our operational processes,” she confirmed.
