Manchester United dismissed Ruben Amorim on Monday, ending the Portuguese manager’s turbulent 14-month tenure at Old Trafford following mounting tensions with the club hierarchy.

The sacking came less than 24 hours after Amorim made controversial comments following United’s 1-1 draw at Leeds on Sunday, where he stressed his role as manager rather than “just the coach” and told the scouting department and director of football Jason Wilcox “to do their job.”

United currently sits sixth in the Premier League table, prompting the club’s leadership to act decisively. The official statement confirmed Amorim had “departed his role as head coach” and cited the need for change to achieve “the highest possible Premier League finish.”

Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher will take temporary charge for Wednesday’s match against Burnley. Fletcher served as United’s technical director between 2021 and 2024 but has never held a senior coaching position.

Amorim’s dismissal represents a dramatic fall from grace for one of football’s most sought-after coaches. He arrived at Old Trafford in November 2024 to replace Erik ten Hag, bringing impressive credentials from Sporting Lisbon, where he secured two league titles.

However, his Premier League statistics paint a dire picture. Amorim recorded the worst win ratio amongst United managers at 32%, the highest goals-conceded-per-game at 1.53, and the lowest clean-sheet percentage at 15%. He won just 25 of his 63 matches across all competitions.

His first season proved catastrophic as United slumped to 15th place, their worst Premier League campaign in 51 years. The team reached the Europa League final in Bilbao but lost to Tottenham, missing out on European qualification for this season.

Despite marginal improvements this campaign, United have managed only eight wins from 20 league matches and trail leaders Arsenal by 17 points. The inconsistent performances and growing tensions behind the scenes ultimately sealed Amorim’s fate.

Reports suggest United’s decision stemmed from lack of progress rather than purely the public power struggle. Amorim had repeatedly hinted at leaving when his contract expired in 18 months, creating uncertainty around his commitment.

His tenure becomes the shortest for a permanent United manager since David Moyes’s eight-month spell in 2014. The 20-time English champions continue searching for stability, having not won the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in 2013.
