EAST LONDON – Two suspects were arrested in connection with a viral video depicting the assault of a security guard at Ebuhlanti Marina Glen in East London, the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed.
Regional SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said, “The suspects face charges of common assault and are expected to appear in court soon.”
In a statement, Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) revealed that a more serious case of Assault with Intent to Do Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) has been opened with police.
The municipality strongly condemned the attack in a statement, describing the video as “disturbing” and showing “motorists attacking the guard whilst on duty.”

BCMM said the suspects were believed to be driving a vehicle without registration plates at the time of the incident, making immediate tracing difficult.
“This is a serious criminal offence and will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” the municipality stated.
Gantana added that the investigation remains active, with further arrests likely. No further information can be shared about this matter.
Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, applauded the swift response of law enforcement officers in effecting the arrests.
BCMM called upon community members with information about the suspects’ identity or whereabouts to contact East London Police Station or the nearest SAPS office.
The municipality issued a stern warning to visitors, “Come and enjoy our city responsibly. Do not come to tarnish the image of Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, disrupt public order, or threaten the safety of others.
“Any form of violence, intimidation, or criminal behaviour within our public spaces will be dealt with swiftly and decisively,” the statement added.
