Sunrisers Eastern Cape delivered a crushing 137-run victory over Paarl Royals at Boland Park, with Jordan Hermann’s explosive batting and Anrich Nortje’s devastating bowling combining to inflict the lowest total in SA20 history.
Hermann remained unbeaten on 62(28) deliveries, smashing five boundaries and four maximums in a scintillating display that anchored Sunrisers’ total of 186/4. The destructive opener recorded his third half-century of the tournament, rescuing his side after they had slumped to 113/3 following early wickets.

Captain Tristan Stubbs won the toss and elected to bat first, with Quinton de Kock 42 (24) and Jonny Bairstow 31 (33) providing a solid foundation through their opening partnership of 66 runs. De Kock struck three boundaries and two sixes in a typically aggressive knock, whilst Bairstow adopted a more measured approach with five fours.
The innings lost momentum when Ottneil Baartman dismissed Bairstow, caught by David Miller at wide mid-on, before Marco Jansen (8) fell to Bjorn Fortuin’s bowling. De Kock’s departure, caught on the mid-wicket boundary off Delano Potgieter, left Sunrisers precariously placed.
Hermann’s arrival transformed the innings completely. His partnership with Matthew Breetzke 31 (23) yielded 73 runs from 45 deliveries, propelling Sunrisers to a formidable total that proved well beyond Paarl Royals’ capabilities.

The Royals’ reply descended into chaos from the outset. Marco Jansen struck first by removing Lhuan-dre Pretorius, caught behind by de Kock after the batsman unsuccessfully reviewed the decision. Adam Milne intensified the pressure by claiming Vishen Halambage (5) and Rubin Hermann (0) in quick succession.
Nortje then unleashed a devastating spell of fast bowling, claiming 4-13 from three overs to destroy any lingering resistance. The South African pace bowler used his express pace and short-ball tactics to devastating effect, castling Delano Potgieter and trapping both Bjorn Fortuin and Mujeeb Ur Rahman behind the stumps.
Kyle Verreynne managed a solitary boundary before falling for 11, whilst young Asa Tribe top-scored with 14, striking two fours before succumbing to Nortje’s bouncer. Tharindu Ratanayake completed the demolition by removing David Miller and Nqobani Mokoena.
The Royals’ capitulation to 49 all out inside 12 overs represented the tournament’s lowest total, highlighting the gulf in performance between the two sides. Sunrisers’ bonus-point victory demonstrated their championship credentials whilst leaving Paarl Royals searching for answers.
