CAPE TOWN – Western Cape Anti Gang Unit (AGU) detectives arrested three suspected gang members during coordinated raids across the Cape Flats over the weekend, in connection with multiple murder and attempted murder cases dating back to 2017.

The arrests were made between Saturday evening and the early hours of Sunday morning in Manenberg, Athlone, and Mitchell’s Plain, following months of investigation into shooting incidents believed to be linked to ongoing gang conflicts.

The operation comes in the wake of a fatal shooting outside the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on 3 December where one person was killed. Minutes later, another man was shot and wounded in nearby Kew Town, highlighting the brazen nature of gang violence in the area.

The three suspects, aged 28, 36, and 38, face charges including murder, attempted murder, and illegal possession of firearms.

The accused are scheduled to appear in the Mitchell’s Plain and Athlone Magistrate’s Courts tomorrow, 29 December.

The weekend arrests form part of a comprehensive strategy by the South African Police Service in the Western Cape to combat escalating gang activity and restore safety to communities terrorised by gang violence across Cape Town.

Police continue conducting targeted operations at identified hotspots, where numerous illegal firearms have been confiscated and arrests made. Police officials note that illegal firearms remain the weapon of choice in gang-related shootings occurring throughout the Cape Flats.

The Western Cape continues to grapple with high levels of gang-related violence, with communities in areas such as Manenberg, Athlone, and Mitchell’s Plain bearing the brunt of ongoing territorial disputes and criminal activities.
