Jayden Schaper extended his extraordinary start to the 2026 European Tour season on Sunday, capturing the Mauritius Open with a spectacular eagle chip-in on the second playoff hole against American Ryan Gerard.
“That’s just such an insane way to finish a tournament,” said the South African after securing his second consecutive playoff victory in as many weeks.
The 24-year-old’s remarkable run began when he joined the five event opening swing upon its arrival in his native South Africa. After finishing second at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in Sun City, Schaper claimed his maiden tour title last week in Johannesburg, also decided in a playoff.
“The last three weeks have been incredible,” reflected Schaper following his latest triumph.
Starting the final round two strokes behind Gerard, Schaper fired a brilliant eight under par 64 to post a 22 under total of 266 and take the clubhouse lead. The American responded under pressure, draining an 18th-hole birdie to force extra holes after carding a closing 66.
However, Schaper’s magic touch continued in the playoff. After both players parred the first extra hole, the South African produced the decisive moment, holing his approach shot for eagle to secure a dramatic victory.
“I wait five years for the first and then the following week (to get the second) is so cool,” Schaper remarked about his rapid-fire success.
Fellow South African Casey Jarvis finished alone in third place, five shots off the pace after posting a final round 71.
Gerard’s runner-up finish proved significant beyond the prize money. The American, who travelled from Florida to the Indian Ocean hoping to qualify for next year’s US Masters, accomplished his mission. Starting the tournament ranked 57th in the world, Gerard’s performance ensures he will finish the year inside the top 50, guaranteeing his invitation to Augusta National.
Schaper’s back-to-back victories have transformed him from promising prospect to established tour winner, with his playoff prowess becoming his calling card. As the European Tour continues its global swing, all eyes will be on whether the South African can maintain this extraordinary momentum.
The victory marks his second professional title and establishes him as one of the tour’s most exciting emerging talents.
