South Africa completed a dominant 3-0 women’s ODI series whitewash over Ireland with a comprehensive six-wicket victory at the Bullring in Johannesburg on Friday, reaching their target of 206 with consummate ease under the floodlights.

Captain Laura Wolvaardt delivered another masterful performance, reaching her century with the winning run to seal victory in perfect style. The Proteas skipper further enhanced her reputation as one of the world’s finest batters, accumulating over 200 runs across the three-match series.

Ireland won the toss and elected to bat first, posting 205 all out in the 46th over, with the Proteas maintaining disciplined bowling throughout. Nonkululeko Mlaba spearheaded the attack with an exceptional 4-33, whilst Tumi Sekhukhune provided valuable support with 2-27 from her injury-disrupted eight-over stint.

Wolvaardt positioned herself strategically at extra cover and claimed a spectacular flying catch to give Leah Jones her first wicket, reducing Ireland to 21-1. Visiting captain Gaby Lewis responded positively, driving Sune Luus through extra cover to reach her 15th ODI half-century in style.

However, Christina Reilly’s stumping by Sinalo Jafta off Sekhukhune’s bowling ended a crucial 99-run partnership at 120/2, triggering Ireland’s collapse. Mlaba then bamboozled Lewis for 64 (80 balls) before getting Laura Delany out in a devastating double-wicket maiden over.

Tuesday’s star performer Orla Prendergast managed only 21 before Faye Tunnicliffe claimed her first international wicket. Although Leah Paul and Rebecca Stokell temporarily stabilised the innings, Stokell’s dismissal – caught at mid-on by Luus – sparked the terminal collapse. Ireland lost their final five wickets for merely 13 runs, leaving them well short of a competitive total.

South Africa’s chase began confidently with Tazmin Brits contributing 26 (21) before edging Arlene Kelly straight to Reilly’s gloves. Wolvaardt reached her 39th ODI half-century with back-to-back boundaries, surpassing 200 runs for the series.

The century partnership materialised in the 15th over when Karabo Meso, promoted up the order, contributed effectively before impatience cost her her wicket. The 18-year-old lurched down the track against Aimee Maguire, allowing Reilly to complete a clean stumping.

Luus entered with aggressive intent, scoring 25 (23) before an outside edge found Reilly’s gloves. Dane van Niekerk couldn’t replicate her Gqeberha heroics, carving straight to point for 10 off Kelly’s bowling.

Despite minor concerns among the remaining batters, Wolvaardt’s assured presence alongside Tunnicliffe’s stability guided the Proteas home. A scampered single sealed victory, confirming South Africa’s comprehensive series dominance and Wolvaardt’s continued excellence on the international stage.
