NAMAHADI, Phuthaditjhaba – The Phuthaditjhaba Public Order Policing Unit, working in conjunction with Crime Intelligence, has successfully recovered an unlicensed firearm from a suspect at Mangaung Village in Qwaqwa, following intelligence received from community members.

On Tuesday afternoon, 16 December, at approximately 14:40, officers from the Public Order Policing Unit executed an intelligence-driven operation that led them to a residence in Mangaung Village. During a thorough search of the premises, police arrested a 39-year-old male after discovering an unlicensed firearm concealed atop a wardrobe.

The recovered weapon had its serial number filed off and was found loaded with ammunition. An empty magazine was also seized during the search.

The suspect has been charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and is scheduled to appear before the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 17 December.

Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring, says the proliferation of illegal firearms remains a serious concern, as many house and business robberies are committed using firearms. “Police commend community members who continue to work closely with law enforcement to ensure that illegal firearms are removed from the wrong hands. The removal of even one firearm can make a significant difference and potentially save lives,” she said.
