JOHANNESBURG – Popular South African radio personality Warrick Stock, better known as DJ Warras, was fatally shot in the Johannesburg CBD this afternoon (16 December).
The 40-year-old former 5FM presenter and Cliff Central host was confirmed dead following a shooting incident that occurred in the city centre during peak afternoon hours.
Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department confirmed the shooting incident but provided limited details about the circumstances surrounding the veteran broadcaster’s death.
“The department can confirm a shooting incident that happened this afternoon in the Johannesburg CBD. JMPD officers were first respondents to the incident when they were stopped by members of the public who alerted them to the shooting.”
A police spokesperson briefly told the media that after parking his car, three men allegedly approached the victim and shot him dead.
Born in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, DJ Warras built a distinguished career spanning over 15 years in South African media. His journey began at YFM in 2008, where he quickly established himself as a talented broadcaster before being promoted to daytime radio in 2010.
Stock gained national prominence during his term at 5FM, where he hosted the popular evening show “The 5th Element”. His charismatic on-air presence and deep knowledge of music made him a favorite among listeners across the country.
Beyond radio, DJ Warras expanded his media presence by co-presenting the SABC 1 music show “Live Amp,” further cementing his status as a versatile entertainer. In 2016, he joined “The Man Cave” team on SABC3 before departing 5FM to focus on television presenting and spend more time with his family.
Most recently, Stock had been hosting “That Drive” on Gagasi FM and was reportedly preparing for a television comeback while working on new music projects. He had also launched a VIP protection services company and was involved in providing security for major events.
