CAPE TOWN – Police arrested five suspects in Gugulethu during the early hours of Saturday 6 December, as part of a crackdown on extortion in the Western Cape. This arrest represents a significant step in combating crime in the area.

Members of Gugulethu SAPS and Law Enforcement spotted a suspicious white Suzuki in NY78 whilst patrolling the area. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped off, sparking a high-speed chase that ended in Naude Street, KTC.

During a search, officers discovered an undisclosed amount of cash inside the vehicle. Further investigation revealed that the Suzuki had been hijacked in Mfuleni in November 2025. The suspects, aged between 22 and 27, now face charges of extortion and possession of a hijacked vehicle. They are expected to appear at Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Police have urged the public to assist by reporting extortion activities. Residents can telephone the Western Cape Extortion Hotline on 0800 31 44 44 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

“This arrest demonstrates our commitment to keeping the community safe and stopping criminal activity in Gugulethu,” said a SAPS spokesperson.
