The Lions defeated the Bulls 43-33 in a spectacular URC derby at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.
Van Rooyen’s men dominated early proceedings in the first match after the international break. The visitors established a commanding 17-0 lead against their traditional rivals.
The Bulls responded brilliantly in the 32nd minute through some excellent attacking play. Embrose Papier finished a superb try after exploiting a line break out wide. The scoreline narrowed to 17-7.
Papier struck again just one minute later with another spectacular support line finish. The Bulls closed the gap further to 17-14 as momentum shifted.
Quan Horn produced a moment of magic in the 36th minute with his grubber kick. Jarod Cairns capitalised on the opportunity to extend the Lions’ lead to 22-14.
Akker van der Merwe scored just before half-time after a powerful 10-metre maul. The Bulls trailed 22-19 at the interval despite their spirited comeback.
The Lions pack gained ascendancy in scrum time during the second half. Their forward dominance proved crucial in wearing down the Bulls’ resistance.
Ettienne Oosthuizen made a vital turnover in the 49th minute as pressure mounted. Bronson Mills delivered an outstanding performance with his powerful carries and tactical kicking.
Oosthuizen crossed the line for a crucial try in the 52nd minute after peeling around the blindside of maul. His score secured the Lions’ bonus point as they led 29-19.
Elrigh Louw made his emotional return after 10 months out with a knee injury. The Sheriff entered the fray in the 58th minute to rapturous applause.
Eduan Keyter exploited gaps in the Bulls’ defence to score in the 72nd minute. The Lions had gained complete control by the 70th-minute mark.
Nico Steyn extended the lead to 43-19 in the 74th minute as spaces opened up. The Lions attacked at will against their tiring opponents.
The Bulls secured a bonus point through Jeandre Rudolph’s pick-and-go try in the 77th minute. His excellent offload made the score 43-26 as hope flickered.
Another Bulls try followed in the 78th minute after a spectacular line break and offload. The scoreboard read 43-33 as the home team pushed for an unlikely comeback.
However, the Lions held firm to secure a famous victory in hostile territory. Their triumph marked an unlikely but thoroughly deserved success in the Jukskei derby.
The sweltering conditions never dampened the spirits of the passionate supporters throughout the encounter. Both teams delivered an entertaining spectacle worthy of this historic rivalry.
