PHUTHADITJHABA – Despite the developer donating approximately 266 hawker stalls, there are insufficient facilities at Setsing Plaza in the Maluti-a-Phofung (MaP) Municipality, creating significant challenges for local traders.
The stalls were donated by Nthoese Development, the developer of the plaza. However, following this development, the Democratic Alliance conducted an oversight visit to the area and was shocked to discover that there are no public toilets in the vicinity.
Health and dignity concerns
The absence of these essential facilities has led to public urination around the municipal fence, posing significant health and dignity concerns for both vendors and customers operating in the area.
The situation has created unsanitary conditions that threaten public health whilst undermining the dignity of traders who rely on the plaza for their livelihoods.

As a key economic hub for local traders, it is unacceptable that hawkers at Setsing Plaza are forced to operate without access to basic amenities. The lack of proper facilities threatens to undermine the viability of this important trading centre.
The Democratic Alliance has urged the municipality to prioritise the provision of adequate facilities and services to support the local trading community. The party emphasises that basic amenities are fundamental rights that should not be overlooked in municipal planning.
Ongoing oversight
The DA will continue to monitor the situation closely and work towards a mutually acceptable resolution that benefits all parties involved.
The situation highlights broader challenges facing municipal service delivery in areas where private development intersects with public responsibility for basic infrastructure provision.
Municipal officials were not immediately available for comment.
