Bongi Mbonambi and Ntuthuko Mchunu have joined the Boks for the tai lend of their tour.

South Africa have summoned hooker Bongi Mbonambi and prop Ntuthuko Mchunu for their final two Castle Lager Outgoing Tour matches.

The duo joined the Springboks squad in Ireland on Sunday. Rassie Erasmus made the decision ahead of crucial encounters against Ireland and Wales.

Mbonambi featured in the Castle Lager Rugby Championship squad earlier this year. The experienced hooker was initially placed on Erasmus’ standby list for the European tour.

Mchunu earned his third and most recent Test cap against Portugal in Bloemfontein. The prop impressed during the 2024 Castle Lager Incoming Series encounter earlier this year.

Erasmus explained the reasoning behind calling up the pair for these crucial fixtures. The coach highlighted the extended nature of the current tour and upcoming challenges.

“This is a longer tour than usual, and we have two big matches lined up,” said Erasmus. “The decision to call up Bongi and Ntuthuko was prompted by these factors.”

Erasmus praised both players’ international experience and contributions to the national setup. He expressed excitement about welcoming the duo back into the Springboks environment.

“Both players have done the job for us on the international stage,” Erasmus continued. “We are excited to have them in the group for these important matches.”

Squad depth concerns influenced the decision to reinforce the touring party immediately. Several players will become unavailable for the Wales match due to international window restrictions.

The Wales encounter falls outside the official international window, limiting player availability significantly. This scheduling constraint forced Erasmus to plan ahead with additional reinforcements for squad depth.

“It makes sense to call up the players now,” explained the coach. “They can get back into the swing of things with us at training.”

The squad will begin their on-field preparations for Ireland on Monday morning.

Erasmus views the additions as crucial for increasing squad depth ahead of challenging fixtures. The coach wants both players integrated into training routines before facing Ireland.

The reinforcements arrive at a perfect time as South Africa prepare for their most demanding fixtures. Both Ireland and Wales present significant challenges for the world champions.

The Springboks’ European tour continues with high-stakes encounters against formidable opposition in hostile environments.
