Simon Harmer bowled South Africa to a memorable 30-run victory over India in Kolkata. The Proteas secured their first Test win in India for 15 years.
India captain Shubman Gill was hospitalised with neck spasms and could not bat. The hosts collapsed to 93 all out while chasing a modest target of 124.
Harmer followed his first-innings figures of 4-30 with a devastating 4-21 in India’s second innings. The off-spinner dismantled India’s batting order on a turning Eden Gardens pitch.
South Africa had struggled early in their second innings, slumping to 91-7 before recovering. Captain Temba Bavuma remained unbeaten on 55, the match’s only half-century by either side.

Corbin Bosch contributed 25 valuable runs as the tourists reached 153 all out. The low-scoring contest favoured the bowlers throughout the three days of play.
India began their chase disastrously, losing early wickets to seamer Marco Jansen. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul both departed cheaply to excellent bowling from Jansen.
Harmer then struck crucial blows, removing Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel. India slumped to 38-4 as their top order crumbled under pressure.
Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar briefly threatened with a 26-run partnership. However, Harmer trapped Jadeja lbw before catching Washington at first slip off Aiden Markram.
Axar Patel provided late drama with a boundary-laden cameo of 26 from 17 balls. The left-hander smashed Keshav Maharaj for two sixes and a four across four deliveries.
Axar’s aggressive approach briefly threatened an unlikely Indian victory from 77-7. However, Bavuma took a superb running catch to dismiss the dangerous batsman.
Maharaj immediately dismissed Mohammed Siraj next ball to seal South Africa’s triumph. The Proteas celebrated wildly after ending their 15-year wait for victory in India.
South Africa had lost seven and drawn one of their previous eight Tests. Their last victory came by an innings in Nagpur back in 2010.
Bavuma celebrated his 10th win in 11 Tests as captain following this impressive performance. The victory gives South Africa a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
The second Test begins in Guwahati on November 22, followed by an ODI and T20 series. South Africa now eyes their first series victory in India since 2000.
