CAPE TOWN – A swimmer is recovering in hospital after a dramatic rescue and lengthy resuscitation effort at Small Bay Beach in Bloubergstrand yesterday afternoon (Sunday 9 November).
According to the Big Bay Surf Lifesaving Club, lifeguards reacted immediately when the swimmer was seen struggling in the water. Acting with calm precision under immense pressure, the lifeguards pulled the patient to shore and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while awaiting emergency services.
“Our team worked together with calm precision under immense pressure — putting their training into action when it mattered most,” said a spokesperson from the Big Bay Surf Lifesaving Club. “After paramedics arrived, the casualty regained a pulse and was stabilised before being transported to hospital. Another life saved at Big Bay.”

Coordinated emergency response
Community Medics, who were among the first emergency responders on scene, confirmed that the rescue was a joint effort involving the City of Cape Town lifeguards, ER24, Netcare 911, and Disaster Risk Management.
“A collaborative effort by medical services from Community Medics, ER24 EMS, Netcare 911 and Disaster Risk Management ensued, lasting over 40 minutes until return of spontaneous circulation was achieved,” the organisation said in a statement. “Effective CPR and cohesive teamwork are instrumental in saving lives.”
The patient was transported to the nearest tertiary hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Community praises lifeguards
Bystanders who witnessed the rescue expressed their admiration for the lifeguards’ professionalism and courage.
“It was incredible to see how quickly they reacted. Everyone knew exactly what to do,” said Megan Jacobs, a local resident.
“The lifeguards didn’t hesitate for a second — they just went straight in,” said Alan Peterson, who was walking nearby. “It’s comforting to know our beaches are watched over by such dedicated people.”
Chantelle du Preez, another bystander, added: “We were all holding our breath watching them work. When they got a pulse, the whole beach cheered. It was such an emotional moment.”
