Italy secured a memorable 24-19 victory over Australia in the Quilter Nations Series at Stadio Friuli.

The Azzurri started with clear intent, earning an early penalty in the seventh minute. Paolo Garbisi confidently slotted the kick to give Italy a 3-0 lead.

Italy dominated the aerial battle early, testing Australia with their intelligent kicking game. The hosts showed their forward power by winning a scrum penalty.

Garbisi extended Italy’s advantage to 6-0 with another accurate penalty kick. Australia finally responded in the 22nd minute through a well-executed maul try, narrowing the gap to 6-5.

Both teams played conservatively as the match struggled to find rhythm. Australia’s persistence paid off in the 32nd minute when Angus Bell burst over after sustained forward carries.

The Wallabies led 12-6 before Italy struck back immediately. Garbisi scored another penalty in the 37th minute, making the half-time score 9-12.

The second half continued at a measured pace with both defences holding firm. Italy levelled the match 12-12 through Garbisi’s fourth penalty in the 49th minute.

Controversy erupted in the 52nd minute when officials awarded Australia a try. Manuel Zuliani appeared to rip the ball from Harry Wilson before Carter Gordon capitalised on the loose ball. Most spectators felt that Wilson had knocked the ball.

Australia’s ill-discipline proved costly as they conceded penalty after penalty. Italy exploited the errors brilliantly, sending Louis Lynagh over through slick handling to tie the match 19-19.

Italy’s confidence soared as they attacked with renewed purpose and intent. Monty Ioane crossed in the corner during the 63rd minute after Australia left space on the edge.

The Azzurri nearly extended their lead when Federico Ruzza intercepted a wayward Australian pass. However, his forward offload prevented a certain try in the 72nd minute.

Italy’s defensive resilience frustrated Australia throughout the encounter. The Wallabies’ penalty count ultimately cost them dearly against determined opposition.

The home crowd celebrated wildly as Italy completed a famous victory. Australia’s discipline issues overshadowed their attacking moments in a disappointing defeat.

Italy’s triumph showcased their growing confidence against traditional rugby powerhouses.
