BLOEMFONTEIN – The Tempe Airfield and Groenvlei communities have lodged formal objections to Mangaung Metro Municipality‘s proposal to sell or dispose of the Tempe Airport for a private estate development.
More than 50 written objections have already been submitted, reflecting deep concern over the municipality’s apparent disregard for due process, transparency, and public participation.

Legal Concerns Raised
The Democratic Alliance, which supports the communities, believes the proposed alienation of this strategic municipal asset is procedurally flawed and potentially unlawful under Section 14 of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA).
Tempe Airfield is a certified and operational airport under the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA). Any attempt to repurpose this site would undermine its aviation status, threaten local jobs, and erode an essential part of Bloemfontein’s transport and economic infrastructure.

Consultation Failures Condemned
“We strongly condemn the municipality’s failure to consult affected tenants, aviation stakeholders, and the local community before pursuing this plan,” said Councillor Kabelo Moreeng.
The communities call for the immediate suspension of all actions related to the proposed sale and demand a transparent, lawful process that protects this vital public asset.
Opposition to Disposal Process
“We will not stand by whilst the ANC-led municipality attempts to dispose of a functioning and strategic airport without following the law or engaging those directly affected,” Moreeng stated.
The objections highlight growing community concerns about municipal asset disposal processes and the potential loss of strategic infrastructure that serves both local and regional aviation needs.
