– In a contest that had everything except comfortable viewing for South African supporters, Nadine de Klerk once again proved her mettle in the crucible of World Cup cricket, steering the Proteas Women to a nerve-shredding three-wicket victory over Bangladesh at the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium on Monday.

Protea women suffer a humiliating defeat against the defending champions

South Africa Women endured a seven-wicket defeat at the hands of their Australian counterparts in the concluding fixture of the World Cup group stages, a result that has significant implications for the tournament’s latter stages.

The outcome ensures that defending champions Australia will face India in the semi-finals, whilst England are set to meet South Africa in what promises to be a compelling encounter, particularly given England’s commanding victory over the same opponents earlier in the competition.

Australian leg-spinner Alana King delivered an exceptional bowling performance, claiming remarkable figures of 7-18 to dismantle South Africa’s batting order in this crucial top-of-the-table ICC Women’s World Cup encounter at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Saturday.

King’s outstanding seven-over spell, which included two maiden overs, saw South Africa dismissed for a paltry 97 runs in just 24 overs. Her figures represent the finest ODI bowling performance by an Australian woman and constitute the best bowling analysis in an ICC World Cup match. This followed Australian captain Tahlia McGrath’s decision to field first after winning the toss.

South African captain Laura Wolvaardt provided early encouragement for her side, striking seven boundaries from 25 deliveries in an opening partnership of 32 with Tazmin Brits (6). However, Wolvaardt’s dismissal—caught by King at short mid-wicket—proved to be the catalyst for a dramatic batting collapse.

Brits soon followed, adjudged leg-before-wicket to Kim Garth (5-2-21-1), and thereafter South Africa’s innings deteriorated markedly.

Sune Luus (6) became King’s inaugural victim, offering a catch to Ash Sutherland at mid-wicket following a miscued slog-sweep. King’s relentless accuracy and sharp turn proved insurmountable for the South African batting lineup, as Annerie Dercksen (5), Sinalo Jafta (29), Nadine de Klerk (14), and Masabata Klaas (4) all succumbed to clean bowled dismissals.

Wicket-keeper Jafta demonstrated considerable resilience and inventiveness in her brief innings, striking seven boundaries from 17 balls in an attempt to disrupt the Australian bowling attack. However, her enterprising knock was ultimately terminated when King produced a delivery of exceptional quality to breach her defences.

Despite this setback, South Africa Women remain in contention for the tournament title and will be determined to produce an improved performance in their upcoming semi-final encounter.
