COLOMBO – The Proteas Women’s cricket team showcased their championship credentials with a commanding 150-run victory over Pakistan in a rain-affected World Cup encounter at the R Premadasa International Stadium on Wednesday, propelling them to the top of the tournament standings.

Star all-rounder Marizanne Kapp delivered a match-winning performance with both bat and ball, scoring an unbeaten 68 and claiming three wickets for just 20 runs to spearhead South Africa’s fifth consecutive victory in the competition.

Despite three rain interruptions that repeatedly disrupted play, the Proteas stuck to their gameplan. After being sent in to bat first and finding themselves precariously placed at 6-1, a two-hour rain delay saw their innings reduced to 40 overs.

The South African batting lineup responded magnificently, posting a competitive total of 312-9. The innings was anchored by three outstanding half-centuries from Kapp, captain Laura Wolvaardt, and Sune Luus, who combined to build a formidable platform despite the challenging conditions.

Pakistan’s revised target of 306 runs quickly became an impossible mountain to climb as the Proteas bowlers struck early and often. Kapp’s fiery opening spell reduced Pakistan to 35-4, effectively ending their hopes of mounting a successful chase.

The weather gods intervened once more, further reducing the match to just 20 overs, but by then the damage was done. Nondumiso Shangase complemented Kapp’s heroics with an impressive return of two wickets for 19 runs, ensuring Pakistan never recovered from their disastrous start.

This convincing victory sees the Proteas momentarily claim the summit of the World Cup standings, establishing themselves as serious contenders for the tournament crown. Their perfect record of five straight wins has transformed them into a force to be reckoned with.

The Proteas face their ultimate test on Saturday when they take on defending champions Australia in their final league fixture in Indore. The match, scheduled for 11:30 SA time, will likely determine the final standings and could prove pivotal in the race for the finals.

Australia, who entered the tournament as title holders, remain unbeaten and will provide the sternest examination yet of South Africa’s championship credentials.

With momentum firmly on their side and confidence soaring, the Proteas Women are perfectly positioned to secure their place in the knockout stages and potentially challenge for their maiden World Cup title.
