POTCHEFSTROOM – The police in Brits finally brought to book one of the wanted suspects who is believed to be behind a spate of carjackings allegedly committed in Brits, Mooinooi, Bethanie and surrounding areas.
According to a police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Sam Tselanyane, police received information on Thursday morning, 02 October, about the suspect’s whereabouts.
A team comprising Bojanala Platinum Sub-District 2 Detectives, an Intervention Team, the Brits Crime Combatting Unit (CCU), the Trio Task Team and the Rustenburg Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VCIU) was established and ultimately pounced on the suspect who was driving a hijacked Volkswagen Polo in Brits.
Following the interview, he led the team to Soshanguve where his accomplice was spotted driving a reportedly hijacked blue Ford Ranger vehicle.
He added that the police returned fire after the suspect allegedly opened fire on them when they tried to stop him.
The suspect sped off, and the police pursued him until the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, disappearing into the dark. The vehicle was later confirmed to have been hijacked at Mooinooi in May 2025.
The arrested 34-year-old suspect will face five counts of carjacking, three of kidnapping, one of murder and one of possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.
Tselanyane said that the possibility of additional charges cannot be ruled out. He is expected to appear before the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 06 October 2025 as the investigation into the matter continues.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General Patrick Asaneng said: “The arrest of this suspect is a testament that the long arm of the law and the wheels of justice will continue to relentlessly pursue, detect and flush out heartless, dangerous criminals like him.
“His arrest is the beginning of the end of his criminal network as the police have identified and are hot on the trail of other members of this murderous carjacking syndicate.”
