POTCHEFSTROOM – The SAPS in Potchefstroom have verified the content of a post circulating on social media regarding the electrocution of a resident at the abandoned railway station in the town.

The post reads: “Please avoid the burnt-down Transnet railway station completely. With year-end functions, many want to take photos there, but it is extremely dangerous. Yesterday, we tragically lost another life due to live electrical cables at the site.”

SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the province confirms that an inquest docket has been registered at Potchefstroom Police Station for investigation after a 19-year-old man was electrocuted yesterday, 24 September, at the local railway station.

Unconfirmed reports state that the victim was a student.

Mokgwabone added: “The victim was with a female companion when the incident occurred. No foul play is suspected at this stage, and the investigation into the matter continues.”

The historical abandoned railway station building is popular location for photographs.
