South African authorities have arrested five Mexican nationals in a major drug bust that uncovered a sophisticated crystal methamphetamine laboratory operating on a remote farm, officials announced Monday, highlighting the expanding reach of Latin American cartels into African markets.

The elite Hawks police unit raided the clandestine facility Friday near Volksrust, approximately 250 km southeast of Johannesburg, seizing methamphetamine with an estimated street value of R 350 million. The drugs were discovered packed in lunch boxes and buckets throughout the rural property.

Hawks investigators are now examining potential links between the operation and established Latin American drug cartels, according to a unit spokesman who spoke to AFP. The discovery represents the latest in an escalating series of similar busts targeting Mexican-run laboratories across the region.

“We are investigating connections to international drug trafficking organizations,” the Hawks spokesman confirmed, as authorities work to map the full extent of the criminal network.

This arrest follows a disturbing trend of Mexican nationals establishing drug production facilities across South Africa. In July 2024, Hawks officers arrested three Mexicans during a raid on a laboratory near Groblersdal, 200 km from Johannesburg, where they confiscated methamphetamine worth approximately two billion rand.

A separate incident in November resulted in another Mexican national’s arrest at a crystal meth facility in Rietfontein, north of Johannesburg, demonstrating the persistent nature of these criminal enterprises.

South Africa has emerged as both a significant consumer of methamphetamine and a strategic hub for regional distribution, with demand expanding rapidly across neighboring countries, according to the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime.

The Geneva-based organization released a comprehensive report in July 2025 documenting the global proliferation of “Mexican meth” laboratories over the past decade, identifying a concerning pattern of international expansion.

“Recent busts of drugs labs in South Africa and Mozambique are emblematic of the expansion of Latin American cartels into Africa and cooperation with local criminal groups as well as other foreign collaborators in production and trafficking,” the Global Initiative reported.

This expansion represents a strategic shift by established cartels seeking new markets and production bases beyond their traditional territories, law enforcement experts believe.

The arrests underscore the increasingly international nature of drug trafficking operations and the challenges facing African law enforcement agencies confronting sophisticated criminal organizations with global reach and substantial resources.

South African authorities continue their investigation into the network’s full scope, working to identify additional suspects and facilities. The case highlights the urgent need for enhanced international cooperation to combat transnational organized crime operations targeting the African continent.
