Authorities announced Friday that they have taken into custody the person believed to have assassinated Charlie Kirk, a prominent right-wing activist and close ally of President Donald Trump, who was shot while speaking at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.

Tyler Robinson, 22, was detained late Thursday evening in Washington County, Utah, after his father and a friend helped turn him in, Utah Governor Spencer Cox told a press conference. The arrest came 33 hours after what had initially appeared to be a slow-moving manhunt.

“We got him,” Governor Cox announced Friday, ending a search that had consumed national attention for 48 hours and captured almost all cable news coverage.

The breakthrough came after investigators released security camera images of a young man dressed in a baseball cap and casual clothing. Late Thursday, Robinson’s family member reached out to a family friend, who contacted the Washington County sheriff’s office with information that Robinson had confessed to or implied that he had committed the assassination.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the arrest was made at 22:00 on Thursday. Robinson was being held on suspicion of aggravated murder and was expected to be formally charged in the coming days.

The shooting

Kirk, the 31-year-old head of the country’s largest conservative youth movement, was speaking at around noon Wednesday when a single shot rang out. The founder of Turning Point USA collapsed with a neck wound, according to graphic video footage that quickly spread across social media. Trump announced his death a few hours later.

Authorities say Robinson used a high-powered, bolt-action hunting rifle, firing from the roof of a building up to 200 yards away from his target while lying prone—a position that can increase accuracy. The alleged murder weapon was later found in a wooded area near the university.

The suspect

Robinson lived with family in Washington County, about 500 km southwest of Orem, near the famed Zion National Park. Photos posted on social media by his mother, Amber, show what appears to be a close-knit family, with Tyler being the eldest of three boys. Neighbors told US media the family was Mormon.

Dixie Technical College confirmed Robinson was in his third year of an electrical apprenticeship program, while Utah State University said he had attended one semester in 2021.

Details emerging from his hometown of St. George – a staunchly conservative city – paint a picture of an unexpected transformation. Former neighbor Heather McKnight told AFP: “Who would have known that this little skinny guy getting in and out of his car would be able to commit such a heinous act?”

Photographs showed Robinson posing with guns and dressed for Halloween in a costume where he appears to be riding Trump’s shoulders. Jaida Funk, a 22-year-old who attended elementary and middle school with him, said: “I always thought he would become a businessman or a CEO someday, rather than what I’m learning about him now. It’s definitely unexpected.”

Governor Cox said in a CNN interview that the suspect was radicalised “in a fairly short amount of time,” without elaborating further.

The motive and evidence

Robinson’s family said he “had become more political” in recent years and had discussed Kirk’s upcoming event at UVU, criticizing the conservative influencer. He was registered to vote as unaffiliated to any political party.

Much attention has focused on the inscriptions found on bullet casings discovered at the crime scene. One cartridge had “Hey, fascist! Catch!” written on it, while another featured “Bella ciao”—apparently referencing a World War II-era Italian anti-fascist song that has recently been repurposed in niche online circles.

Other cartridges were marked with symbols and wording that appeared to be from online gaming culture.

The victim’s legacy

Kirk was an electrifying presence on the US right, co-founding Turning Point USA in 2012 at age 18 to drive conservative viewpoints among young people. His natural showmanship made him a go-to spokesman on television networks, and he used his audiences on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube to build support for conservative talking points.

The father-of-two helped Trump build a large youth vote in his November presidential election victory, though he remained a highly divisive figure, espousing hardline views on race, gender, and gun ownership. Even his critics often praised Kirk’s willingness to debate.

Political and personal reactions

Politicians across the political spectrum quickly condemned the killing, with many calling on Americans to heal growing divisions. Trump’s initial reaction on Wednesday was to blame “the radical left,” but he toned down his rhetoric Thursday, saying Kirk had been “an advocate of nonviolence.”

“That’s the way I’d like to see people respond,” Trump said.

The president announced he would posthumously decorate Kirk with America’s highest civilian honor, the Medal of Freedom, and confirmed he would attend Kirk’s funeral. Kirk’s coffin was transported to his home city of Phoenix on Vice President JD Vance’s official plane, and Trump ordered flags to fly at half-mast.

In a heartbroken live video address Friday, Kirk’s widow Erika pledged to continue her husband’s work: “The evil-doers responsible for my husband’s assassination have no idea what they have done. The movement my husband built will not die. It won’t. I refuse to let that happen.”

She mourned the loss of “the perfect father… the perfect husband.”

Seeking justice

Utah has the death penalty for aggravated murder—a punishment Trump has said he would like imposed in this case. The assassination represents the latest in a series of shootings and assaults against politicians over the last decade, including two assassination attempts on Trump, adding to a long history of political violence in the United States.

Mass shootings by typically young, disturbed men remain common in the US, where powerful firearms are easily available.

As the investigation continues, the nation grapples with yet another act of political violence that has shaken the foundations of American discourse and highlighted the dangerous escalation of political divisions.
