CAPE TOWN – Western Cape Anti-Gang Unit officers confiscated a prohibited AK-47 assault rifle and ammunition during a targeted operation in Delft on Wednesday, arresting a 24-year-old suspect in connection with the illegal possession of the high-caliber weapon.

The operation, conducted at a residence in Gilo Street in the N2 Gateway area, saw police acting on intelligence about a firearm being stored at the property. Officers surprised the occupant and conducted a thorough search of the premises, discovering the assault rifle concealed in a plastic bag beneath a bed.

The arrest comes as the Western Cape continues to grapple with a devastating gang violence epidemic that almost daily claims lives across the Cape Flats. Communities in areas like Hanover Park, Lavender Hill, Manenberg, and Delft have become battlegrounds of gang warfare.

Police statistics consistently show that the majority of murders in the Western Cape are gang-related, with firearms being the primary weapon of choice.

Western Cape police have identified the removal of illegal firearms from communities as a critical priority in their fight against gang violence. The Anti-Gang Unit, specifically established to combat organised crime syndicates, conducts regular operations aimed at disrupting criminal networks and seizing weapons before they can be used in violent crimes.

The 24-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition. If convicted, he faces substantial prison time under South Africa’s strict firearms legislation.
