A 26-year-old Mozambican traditional healer appeared in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrates’ Court on charges of possession of human tissue, following a discovery linked to a murder investigation in Brits.
Aizeque Zacaria Cumbuia was found in possession of human tissue on 7 August in a room where he was practicing as a traditional healer. The discovery was made by police officers conducting investigations into a separate murder case involving a female victim who was killed, had body parts removed, and her body burned.
The case has drawn attention due to its connection to the ongoing Brits murder investigation, where the victim’s body was mutilated before being burned. Police stumbled upon Cumbuia’s alleged possession of human tissue while pursuing leads in that case.
During his court appearance, the matter was postponed to 28 August for a formal bail application. The state has indicated it will oppose Cumbuia’s release on bail, suggesting prosecutors view him as a flight risk or believe his release could compromise the investigation.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about illegal practices involving human remains, particularly in relation to traditional healing practices.
The National Prosecuting Authority confirmed the court proceedings and the state’s intention to oppose bail.
