UFC middleweight champion Dricus “Stilnox” du Plessis will put his title on the line against undefeated challenger Khamzat Chimaev in the main event of UFC 319 tomorrow morning (SA time) at Chicago’s United Center – with South African fans needing to set their alarms for an early Sunday morning spectacle.

The 31-year-old South African champion enters the octagon as the betting underdog against his undefeated 14-0 Russian opponent, but Du Plessis has proven throughout his career that he thrives when the odds are stacked against him.

South African UFC enthusiasts will need to wake up early or stay up late to catch their champion in action. The main card begins at 04:00 SAST on Sunday, August 17th, with Du Plessis and Chimaev expected to make their cage walks around 06:05 SAST.

Local fans can watch the action live on SuperSport channels via DStv, specifically on SuperSport Action, or stream the event through the DStv Stream app with an appropriate sports package. Pay-per-view charges may apply for this title fight.

At Thursday’s pre-fight promotional event, Du Plessis faced a predominantly pro-Chimaev crowd, offering a taste of what awaits him on fight night. The composed champion did his best to drown out the boos, maintaining his characteristic calm demeanor despite the challenging atmosphere.

“I think it’s the fact that I want to go out there and fight the best,” Du Plessis stated confidently. “Remember when you’re cheering Saturday night.”

This marks Du Plessis’s first fight on US soil since 2023, while his 31-year-old challenger hasn’t competed in the United States since 2023.

The road to UFC 319

Du Plessis claimed the middleweight crown by defeating Sean Strickland on a split decision in January 2024. Since then, he has successfully defended his title twice – submitting former champion Israel Adesanya at UFC 305 last August, then defeating Strickland again by decision at UFC 312 in February.

Chimaev arrives at UFC 319 fresh off a devastating first-round submission victory over former champion Robert Whittaker in October 2024, demonstrating the explosive finishing ability that has made him one of the most feared fighters in the division.

The matchup presents a fascinating stylistic clash. Chimaev enters as the betting favorite with odds around -260, while Du Plessis sits at approximately +210. The key concern for the South African champion lies in his 50% takedown defense rate, which could prove problematic against Chimaev, who averages 4.31 takedowns per 15 minutes and has never been taken down in the UFC.

However, Du Plessis’s proven toughness and striking accuracy have seen him overcome seemingly impossible odds before, notably in his victories over former champions Adesanya and Strickland.

Chimaev’s bold prediction

The Russian challenger didn’t mince words during the promotional events, offering a stark prediction for fight night: “Africa never gonna see the belt again. Sorry guys.”

Such confidence isn’t unfounded – Chimaev’s perfect record and dominant performances have established him as one of the most feared finishers in the sport. Betting analysts favor an early finish, with many predicting the fight won’t go the distance.

High stakes

For Du Plessis, a successful defense would mark his third title retention and cement his status among the elite middleweights. A victory would also continue South Africa’s proud tradition in combat sports and potentially set up even bigger fights in 2025.

For Chimaev, victory would fulfill his long-anticipated potential and make him the first undefeated fighter to capture the UFC middleweight title in recent memory.

While the odds may favor the challenger, South African fight fans know better than to count out their champion. Du Plessis has built his career on exceeding expectations and silencing doubters, traits that will serve him well in the hostile environment of Chicago.

Set those alarms for Sunday morning – this promises to be a fight that will be remembered long after the final bell sounds.
