Mangaung Metro started the month of August on a high note when Operation Shanela II launched high-density deployment actions in Mangaung (Bloemfontein).
The District Commissioner of the metro, Maj-Gen Arthur Peter Adams, gave the officials marching orders to eradicate crime in identified hotspots.
Together with his deputies, Brig. Dingiliswe Fothoane and Brig. Teboho Jacobs, and their station commanders, they painted the streets of Mangaung blue.
The team launched foot patrols in Sector 1: Kenworth Shopping Complex, Moshoeshoe Street, Sibizi Street, and M10 Road. “The area is affected by crimes such as cross-pavement robbery, common robbery, robbery with weapons other than firearms, theft from motor vehicles, and assaults—both common assault and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm,” says Lt Col Thabo Covane, Corporate Communication and Liaison: Free State.
Adams made use of the opportunity to discuss safety tips against crime with community members on the ground.
During the operation, three people were arrested for being in the Republic of South Africa without proper documentation, and two others were arrested for drink-driving. Covane says various operational concepts will be carried out throughout the weekend in different crime hotspots.
