CAPE TOWN – An elderly woman was shot in the stomach during gang crossfire yesterday.
Crimewatch groups say the 70-year-old woman was hanging washing in her yard in Beacon Valley when shooting broke out and she was shot.
Sgt Wesley Twigg of the police’s provincial media office said a case of attempted murder had been opened.
He said the shooting happened in Tennis Street about 08:30.
“Mitchell’s Plain police responded to a complaint of a shooting on Sunday morning, 26 October,” Twigg said. “On arrival on the scene they found a 70-year-old female who sustained a gunshot wound to her stomach.”
Twigg said the woman was taken to hospital and no arrests had yet been made.

Meanwhile, in Eastridge, residents marched to Eastville Primary School on Friday 24 October because a teacher had allegedly behaved inappropriately with several learners.
One learner’s grandmother said in a voicenote circulating on WhatsApp that the teacher had exposed her granddaughter’s breasts in class and mocked their size.
She allegedly also told learners details about her sex life and flashed her private parts to one of the children and asked him how it smelled.
The voicenote said the teacher threatened to beat the children if they told their parents.
“The children of Eastville are traumatised,” the woman said.
She said parents marched to the school to demand that the teacher be removed, but were not allowed through the gates. The woman claimed the deputy principal had come to speak to the parents but the woman was not removed.
Western Cape Education Department spokesperson Milicent Merton said the woman was a governing body member.
“A complaint about a SGB member who also volunteers at the school was reported on Friday and is being investigated,” she said. “The allegations are concerning and counselling support will be made available to any affected learners.”
