What started as a peaceful evening run along Table Mountain’s Pipe Track ended in a dramatic cliffside rescue near Spring Buttress on Thursday night 15 October after a hound tried to outrace a local mountain goat.
The pup was enjoying a walk his owner when he spotted a Tahr—an exceptionally agile mountain mammal well-suited to the rocky slopes. Thereafter the determined dog bolted after the goat, unaware of the danger ahead.
Chase
The wild goat easily navigated the steep terrain and vanished down the mountainside.
The pursuing hound followed the animal nearly 80 metres below the main trail before finally realising that it was completely stranded.
While getting down the mountain had proven easy, getting back up was an impossible task.
The dog’s owner carefully climbed a short distance down the slope, but stopped before putting himself in danger. Spotting his furry companion trapped on a narrow ledge directly below a steep cliff, he immediately called the emergency services for professional assistance.
Rescue
A specialised team from Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) swiftly deployed to the scene. Utilising a technical rope system, a dedicated rescuer was lowered directly to the ledge.
The stranded hound was happily secured inside a specialised rope bag and carefully hoisted back to the safety of the trail. The complex operation concluded successfully at 22:45.
WSAR reminds the public that rescue services in South Africa are entirely free and urges outdoor enthusiasts to call 021 937 0300 early if they or their pets get into trouble.
