CAPE TOWN – A Working on Fire helicopter has crashed on Hout Bay mountain during ongoing firefighting operations, with emergency services currently responding to the scene.
Ward Councillor Roberto Quintas confirmed the incident occurred earlier this evening whilst the helicopter was mopping up hot spots on the mountain.
“One of the fire choppers mopping up hot spots crashed against the mountain earlier this evening. It is miraculous that the pilot has only sustained minor injuries,” Quintas stated at 19:20 on Wednesday evening.
The councillor added that there is a fire crew on site who will manage the secondary fire caused by the crash once the area is secured.
Ongoing fire operations
The helicopter crash occurred as crews continue to battle a vegetation fire that has been raging since Tuesday afternoon, with several flare-ups observed today requiring aerial support.
Volunteer Wildfire Services confirmed the incident on their Facebook page this afternoon, stating they had dispatched a crew to assist South African National Parks (SANParks) with the ongoing Vlakkenberg/Hout Bay fire when the crash occurred.
“We are also aware of reports that a Working on Fire helicopter has crashed on Hout Bay mountain during operations. Emergency services are currently on scene. At this stage, it has been reported that both pilots are safe,” VWS posted.

As reported by People’s Post earlier today (Wednesday 25 March), the blaze started above Grotto Road on Tuesday at 13:40 and spread overnight after cresting the mountain ridge. The fire has since reached the top of Vlakkenberg mountain and is spreading towards Klein Constantia Farm.
Despite rain earlier this morning, VWS reports that several flare-ups were observed on the fire line today, with the affected area remaining extensive. Firefighting crews from the City of Cape Town Fire & Rescue Service, SANParks and Table Mountain National Park continue operations with five fire engines, two water tankers, three helicopters and a fixed-wing spotter aircraft deployed at the height of efforts.
All trails in the affected area remain closed with immediate effect for public safety. Emergency officials have urged the public to avoid the area and allow emergency teams to continue their work safely.
No property damage has been reported from the fire.
Councillor Quintas extended heartfelt thanks to all emergency personnel involved and sincere wishes for a speedy recovery for the pilot.
This is a developing story. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
