A senior Western Cape police officer is expected to return to the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 27 May after he was granted R5 000 bail with strict conditions earlier this week.
The 45-year-old colonel attached to the Western Cape Protection and Security Services unit faces rape and sexual assault charges.
According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), the officer allegedly raped and sexually assaulted a 44-year-old female subordinate in May last year.
The alleged incident took place while both worked in the same unit. During his court appearance on Wednesday 15 April, the court ordered him not to contact or communicate with the complainant.
He must also comply with any additional restrictions imposed by the court. IPID said the case was postponed to allow consultation between the accused and his legal representative.
National rape case statistics
The directorate investigates criminal offences allegedly committed by members of the South African Police Service. In its latest statistics, IPID reported 116 rape cases had been registered nationally by the end of March this year.
These cases form part of a wider category of serious offences under investigation. The Eastern Cape recorded the highest number of cases with 22.Gauteng and the Western Cape each recorded 21 cases.
Ongoing concerns
The figures highlight ongoing concerns about misconduct and criminal allegations within policing structures. IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping said 65 cases had been finalised and referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions for a decision.
She said these referrals help determine whether prosecutions will proceed. Suping added that recent convictions in similar cases have resulted in sentences ranging from eight to 25 years’ direct imprisonment.
The sentence depends on the severity of the offence and court outcomes. She said IPID remains committed to accountability and upholding the rule of law within law enforcement agencies.
