Teachers play a vital role in society. Therefore, Weslander was proud to honour those who help shape the minds of young ones with their Weslander Onnie van die Jaar (Teacher of the Year) competition.

With nominations coming in from parents, fellow teachers and learners alike, the winners in their various categories were selected. It was quite an emotional moment for the teachers shared with Weslander’s editor Maryke Swart and journalist Noluvu Ludidi who visited the schools to do the surprise announcement and handover of their gifts.

Marilize Kock, winner in the senior phase and teacher at Diazville High School, said she is humbled and highly appreciative of this award. “I would like to thank every person who played a role in awarding me with the honour. I recognise that other teachers may be more deserving of awards such as these and would therefore like to dedicate this accolade to my colleagues at Diazville High School as well as my late husband, Ronald Kock.”

Babalwa Dyanti-Dipa, teacher at Masiphatisane Primary School and winner in the foundation phase, on hearing the news said she was confused at first. “I was not aware I had been nominated and very shocked that I won, since I know my colleagues are hard workers [too]. At the same time I was very excited as I stand for my school, Masiphathisane Primary.”

For Lucinda Noble, who won in the intermediate phase and teaches at Longacres Private School, the news was just as much of a shock. “I could not believe it!” she declared. “It was really such a big surprise and such a big honour. I was wondering how I was going to say thank you to everyone so they may know I appreciate it so much. The support of my loved ones, my colleagues, the parents and, of course, my children is my driving force.”

Weslander also had a category for sports coach of the year. As there were no nominations in this category, Weslander decided to award this prize to Christopher Rodgers, deputy principal of Langebaan Primary School and chairman and head coach of Langebaan Athletics Club (LAC).

Swart explained the winner in this category was decided on the basis of his/her contribution in the field of sports and sports development among school learners.

“Rodgers stood out like a pole above water, not only as a coach but also because of the support he offers and the foundation he lays for promising young athletes to achieve further, in his capacity as chairman of LAC.

Rodgers said he was pleasantly surprised by the award and did not expect it at all. He said his aim is to make a difference in the lives of many athletes to come. He also thanked his team that walks with him and shares his vision.

Weslander hopes to see many more nominations next year, as these heroes are honoured once again.
