The second annual Walk for Recovery event on the West Coast was a huge success.

Despite the rainy weather about 200 people attended the walk on Saturday 30 September in Langebaan. The Walk for Recovery spanned 5 km and concluded at the Langebaan Seabreeze Hall.

Hosted by the non-profit organisation Heavenly Haven Retreat, founder Ruth McPherson explained that September was National Recovery Month, promoting universal recovery through global walks. “These events educate about mental health, substance-use disorders, celebrate recovery and inspire change. They also emphasise meeting people where they are, translating into acknowledging their unique experiences.”

She explained the event hosted on the West Coast was launched with the goal of providing support to individuals in recovery, while also working towards reducing the stigma associated with addiction. “Our mission is to spread awareness, inspire change and celebrate the courageous journey of recovery. We’re dedicated to raising awareness, breaking the stigma of overdosing.”

McPherson said, overall, it was an incredible day of impact and celebration.

“Presence and enthusiasm filled the day with hope and inspiration as we stood together to make a difference,” she said.
