Weslander journalist Noluvu Ludidi, Masiphatisane Primary teacher Nomasango Noma (winner in the intermediate phase) and principal René Joorst.

Weslander was proud to honour the teachers who make a difference in the lives of young ones with its first WeslanderOnnie van die jaar (Teacher of the Year) competition.

In last week’s edition the top 10 finalists and four winners were announced. The four winners are from Masiphatisane Primary School, Diazville High School, Middlepos Primary School and St Helena Bay Primary School.

Weslander’s editor Maryke Swart and this writer visited the schools to hand their certificates and prizes over, which was a pleasant surprise for the teachers.

Nosithembele Mazula, the winner in the foundation phase from Middlepos Primary School, said winning showed and proved to her that there are people who believe in her.

Thembisa Sidumo a teacher at Diazville High School, who won in the senior phase, said she respected the public for noticing that teachers go beyond the call of duty. “I am really grateful for the nomination and their voting for me,” she said.

Receiving the news that she had won in the intermediate phase was a huge shock for Nomasango Noma, a teacher at Masiphatisane Primary School. “I am immensely thankful for the award presented by Weslander,” she said. “It brings more self-belief and dedication to my work.”

Lastly, Masibulele Ntanjana from St Helena Bay Primary School, who won the coach of the year award, said it was a great pleasure for him to see family, colleagues and friends had voted for him.

“Sport is in my blood and I have done a lot of things for the schools and the community of St Helena Bay,” he said. “A special thank you also goes to principal Williams for all the support I receive from him.

“Thank you Weslander for giving me this opportunity for it means a lot to me. I wish you can continue to recognise more people that are doing great things in our communities.”

Weslander is also especially grateful to the businesses and individual, Waltons Vredenburg, Pick n Pay Vredenburg (Ipic Centre) and Whilna Alexander (One tough cookie), for sponsoring the prizes.
