West Coast Motorcycle Association getting ready to hand over toys.

On Sunday (19 February) the West Coast Motorcycle Association embarked on a round trip to police stations on the West Coast.

The purpose was to distribute bags of soft toys that were collected during the annual Toy Run. This takes place every year in November, when motorcyclists from all over come together and donate cash in the form of an auction and soft toys as well as educational toys and some sanitary wares, which get distributed, firstly, among known orphanages such as Huis Hadassa and Huis Agape, both in Vredenburg.

The cash gets donated to Eilandhuis in St Helena Bay, who takes care of physically handicapped people. The remainder of the toys are then distributed among the trauma centres of local police stations and Huis van Heerden in Moorreesburg.

Motorcyclists from such clubs as Undaunted, Die Meeulanders, Mac’s, Rebel Jacks and Mac’s Familia and a few independent motorcyclists met at the West Coast Mall at 08:30 and departed shortly after 09:00 on Sunday, with the first drop-off at Vredenburg Police Station, where Captain du Plessis received the toys on behalf of the trauma centre.

From there the various motorcycle clubs went on to St Helena Bay Police Station where Sergeant Zembeta received goods on behalf of their trauma centre.

In Laaiplek, Captain Bostelmann and Constable Gomba received the toys, and Sergeant Demas at Langebaan.

The round trip came to an end at the Saldanha Police Station, with Constable Septoo receiving the last of the toys. All the motorcyclists went for a cooling off at Captain’s Cabin in Saldanha afterwards.

Apart from the big donations, motorcyclists also participate in the deliveries at their own expense, without any financial help from anywhere.

The next Toy Run takes place in November this year at the golf club in Velddrif, and all motorcyclists, their families and supporters are invited again to bring toys, sanitaryware and educational toys.

It is also an opportunity to thank the community that supports bikers and what they do and stand for.
