Foundation visited the Velddrif Cricket Club on Friday 6 June and handed much-needed cricket gear and equipment over.

The club was established in 1992 with one senior men’s team, which participated in the Cricket Boland First Division. It values its non-racial roots and has players from all the suburbs making up the community of Velddrif. Melvin de Bruyn, chair of the Velddrif Cricket Club, said its mission is to further the sport among youth, particularly from communities where access is more of a challenge, and therefore has a strong focus on social and community development.

“We operate within a context where most of our players and supporters are from the poorer sections of our town, where unemployment, gangsterism and drug abuse are rife. Notwithstanding this difficult social context we have been very successful over the last few years. In the 2013-’14, 2014-’15 and 2024-’25 Boland Cricket 1st Division – West Boland T20 champs. In 2024 we established our ladies cricket team, which plays in the West Coast Ladies Cricket competition.”

The men play in the men’s West Coast first division while the ladies play in the West Coast Women’s Cricket League.

The season came to an end in February this year.

The men’s team finished 4th in the 50 overs competition and won the T20 competition while the women were placed first in the West Coast Division.
