Transnet has found common ground with its employees after a strike that lasted nearly two weeks.

According to a statement made by Transnet, Transnet and its majority union, the United National Transport Union, reached a three-year wage agreement on Monday 17 October.

This agreement is for the period of April 2022 until 31 March 2025. It is agreed that employees will receive a 6% wage increase for the first year and a 5,5% increase for the second year. Thereafter workers will receive 6% for the third year.

According to Ply Wevers who has been working for Transnet in Saldanha for about 14 years the offer is much better than the 1,5% which was offered a few months ago.

Transnet furthermore said in their statement that the company’s priority in the immediate is to clear any backlogs across the port and rail system.

Among those are “prioritising urgent and time sensitive cargo and implementing recovery plans”.
