Today, on Mandela Day (18 July) hundreds of local individuals and businesses will reach out to the less fortunate.

On Mandela Day people are called to devote just 67 minutes of their time to change the world for the better in a small gesture of solidarity with humanity, in homage to the legacy of the late former President Nelson Mandela.

Mandela Day each year receives much attention, and on that day do-gooders are out in full force feeding and doing their best to help those less fortunate.

But the past few days have been proof that acts of kindness should not take place only on one day of the year.

The entire province suffered hardships due to stormy weather since 7 July, leaving many out in the cold and undernourished. One will hope that many do-gooders have been reaching out to individuals or organisations to assist in whichever way they can.

Right through the year small gestures can be made, such as adopting a granny, feeding the hungry, passing unwanted goods on to those in need. Give a can of pet food to your local SPCA or even just smile and greet your fellow human when walking in the street.

And these small gestures can surely be done more regularly to make a difference in the lives of the needy around us.
