It is said that “You are fired” are the three words that made the USA great. Of equal importance are the other three words “I’m outa hyar”.
If these words emanate from a company star performer, they are likely to send shivers down an employer’s spine. It is high time for him/her to take a long hard look at their management style. Adjustments need to be made or they will soon go out of business.
A previous editor of the Weslander once stated that if you can’t say something nice about someone you should say nothing at all. That is not what investigative journalism is about.
However, she did not like my proposal that we should build a new ore terminal at Doringbaai close to the mine. She said we would lose even more jobs in Saldanha, now that Arcelor Mittal had closed their doors.
Having a close association with PPC, I learnt that all their staff members that worked at the steel mill had no difficulty in seeking alternative employment. Good management practice made sure they were multi-skilled through rotation of responsibilities.
No doubt about it, solid forward planning pays. A dust free Saldanha would finally attract much needed foreign direct investment. This would also finally justify the existence of the Saldanha IDZ (Free Port). Who knows, one day we might get around to building an Inland Port.
