Bakkies Vraagom with his boat Jacob V, alongside his crew and other community members loaded masses of crayfish onto trucks from Elands Bay transporting it to Lamberts Bay last week. This after red tide caused thousands of crayfish and other ocean species to walk out onto the shores of Elands Bay due to lack of oxygen caused by the red tide. As part of the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries’ contingency plan the department called for communities and all other role players to assist with the clean-up operations last week. According to the department the crayfish pose no threat to humans or the ocean once placed back into clear water, only crayfish and other fish who have died and rot quickly pose a threat to the public. The department said clean-up operations of collecting dead lobsters are still continuing.
