With an energetic atmosphere and high spirits, the first leg of the 2025 West Coast Street Mile kicked off on Saturday 7 September.

Hosted by Langebaan Athletics Club in association with the Langebaan Sports Development Foundation about 200 athletes participated in the first leg of the Street Mile Series, which took place at Seabreeze Hall in Langebaan.

According to Christopher Rodgers, race director, the first leg was a success, but there will much to see in the second and final legs which will take place on Saturday 13 and Saturday 27 September.

Rodgers said the event is a great opportunity for West Coast locals to take part in their own area.

It is also a great way to promote athletics within communities and the development of the youth.

What is amazing to see are the new additions to the race, which included the the u-7 and older-than-80-year-old categories. “It just showed once again one is not too young or to old to take part in the Street Mile Series.”

Various athletes shared with Weslander how important this race was to them, an excitement that was so palpable it almost filled the air.

Prize money for the senior athletes amounts to R10 000 for both male and female winners, and prizes for schools with the most entries amount to R4 000.
