The Green Connection mourns the loss of Solene Smith, sister, activist, leader and spokesperson for the fishing community of the West Coast, dedicated to protecting our oceans that coastal communities such as hers depend on.
Lizizwe McDaid, The Green Connection’s strategic lead, said Solene’s legacy is one of tireless activism and unwavering commitment. She was a stalwart defender of the West Coast, standing against offshore oil and gas exploration and leading the charge to stop the threat of Karpowerships.
Solene’s passion for preserving the ocean’s bounty was matched only by her determination to safeguard the livelihoods of small-scale fishers, especially the women who are the backbone of the industry.
Neville van Rooy, The Green Connection’s Community Outreach Coordinator, reflects: “Solene was more than just an activist. She was a leader, a voice for the voiceless, and a guardian of our oceans, and her impact extends far beyond her immediate community, inspiring the new generation of activists and resonating with countless individuals whose lives she touched. Her absence leaves a void in the fight for environmental justice, but her legacy will continue to guide and inspire us.”
The Green Connection extends heartfelt condolences to Solene’s loved ones, friends and the entire community of Langebaan and the West Coast. Her unwavering dedication to her community leaves an indelible mark on the landscape of activism and advocacy.
“As we mourn her passing we recommit ourselves to the cause she held dear, honouring her memory by continuing the struggle to preserve and protect our oceans,” said Neville. “Rest in power to this stalwart of an activist and ocean defender whose legacy has left a lasting impression on us all.”
