Athletes gave it their all at the second leg of the West Coast Street Mile Series and the Boland Athletics 5 km trails, which started at the Langebaan Town Hall.
According to Christopher Rodgers, race director, it was well-supported and various schools and clubs as far as Worcester and Cape Town participated. As he explained, he saw the event as a great opportunity for locals from the West Coast to take part in their own area.
Unfortunately, the athletes from the Athlete Academy and Stellenbosch High School could not participate due to the Gun Run race, which took place over the same weekend.
Nevertheless William Kaptein (Thymebank Langa) and Lezay Willemse (Velocity Athletics Club) showed up and showed what they were made of defending their titles in the senior men’s and women’s division.
The two athletes showed they were not just going to hand the win over to the team of Elana Meyer-van Zyl and Zola Budd-Pieterse. Kaptein won in a time of 4 minutes and 31 seconds and Williams was in a battle with Sharlon Boer (Thymebank Langa), but won and finished in a time of 5 minutes and 42 seconds.
The Boland Athletics 5 km trails was won by Divano Fallet, a junior of Langebaan Athletics Club, in a time of 15 minutes and 50 seconds. In second place was Sanwill van Wyk (Langebaan Athletics Club) who finished in a time of 16 minutes and 24 seconds.
The final part of the West Coast Mile Series will take place on Saturday 21 September at Seabreeze Park in Langebaan. The 5 km will start at 08:00 and the Street Mile at 09:00 for the 8-year-olds and at 11:15 for the 50+, 60+ and 70+.
The prize-giving ceremony will start at 12:00. Cash prizes to the value of R57 000 with incentives for breaking records and numerous lucky draws will be given away among others as well as weekend getaways, vouchers and more. Make sure you don’t miss out on this day.
